Renewable energy equipment supplier Dako Power has revealed that it will be selling Tesla Powerwall unit packages from the beginning of next year.
If you’ve never heard of it, the Tesla Powerwall is a lithium-ion batter that receives its charge from solar panels, which was unveiled in May of this year by South African-born technology entrepreneur Elon Musk.
At the time of the announcement, it was uncertain whether the Powerwall would make its way to South Africa. Dako Power, however has unveiled a package that will retail for around R225 000 and will include:
Dako Power says the setup will provide enough electricity to run most energy efficient appliances in a standard house. It said that it will be enough to power lights, TV, DStv, fridge, computer and a microwave.
Right now you can register your interest in the Tesla Powerwall, which will only be available in Johannesburg and Cape Town, towards the first quarter of next year.
“Powerwall comes in 10 kWh weekly cycle and 7 kWh daily cycle models. Both are guaranteed for ten years and are sufficient to power most homes during peak evening hours. Multiple batteries may be installed together for homes with greater energy need, up to 90 kWh total for the 10 kWh battery and 63 kWh total for the 7 kWh battery,” Dako explains.
One of the most remarkable things about Powerwall is that, like Tesla’s intellectual property for electric vehicles, Musk says that the patents for Powerwall will be open to allow others to innovate around the tech. That could have interesting implications for South Africans involved in similar areas, likePretoria’s Netsheild SA.
